ANAK JANGKAR – Solo Exhibition by Miko Jatmiko

“Miko Jatmiko is one of the artists, for whom ancient symbols and contemporary realities come together in community and private spaces, to entertain, connect and educate his viewers, perhaps even stimulate them to bring restorative action into the world. Beauty is medicine. So is laughter. Therefore, at whatever level you take the messages in Miko Jatmiko’s art, lean back into the pure enjoyment of them, colours and forms in the humor, and the delicious contradictions, and then see wherever else your journey of engagement may lead you. Urgent appeals for us to wake up and change our ways do not have to sound hysterical or be militant. Important messages can be delivered with humour. Miko’s art does this. His art is birthed on his bridge between communal and individual inspirations. His art is both personal and public. Miko’s apprenticeship with Malioboro, with the consciousness and personality of the street itself, has led him to the last two-plus decades, where his art supplies are less purchased from industrial art materials but collected from the detritus of industrial consumerism. Miko Jatmiko’s art shows us one way to transform the ugliness and the non-perishables with both profound messages served with sprinkles of humor. A contemporary expression of ancestral forms and practices.”
